There’s a lump caught in his throat, and Jon struggles to swallow it without fearing he might choke, it makes eyes water and creates the illusion of grief. Though perhaps it might not be an illusion at all, an accidental display of the emotions he’d thought caged like one of his many white doves. He notes this display, and what was left of his stoic mask cracked and split in two; there’s RAGE beneath it, and the grief the other can see so clearly.
“ No SANE man would return there, but he’d know how to step forth. “
Perhaps it was an admission of his disturbed mind, or simply the words of a lost man driven into ( what he’d think in his state of feeling dreadful for himself ) madness. Jon is certainly no sane man, and so what might he do?
